Check the item and U.S. destination before buying
Start with a supported marketplace such as Mercari Japan or Yahoo Auctions Japan. Save the original listing and confirm the item, quantity, condition and Japan domestic delivery charge. A seller's domestic shipping price is not the cost of delivery to the USA.
If the item contains batteries, liquids, food or other potentially restricted contents, contact JPS before ordering. Check the intended U.S. address and postal code: acceptance and available delivery methods can depend on both the contents and destination. A carrier's public service listing does not mean JPS can offer it for your parcel.

Separate the purchase payment from the shipping quote
The purchase stage covers the item and applicable Japan-side charges. International shipping is determined later, after the warehouse has prepared the parcel. Buying a low-priced item does not necessarily make its international delivery inexpensive.
For the complete budget, review the official JPS fee page rather than treating a marketplace price or an early estimate as the delivered total. Do not assume U.S. import charges are included in a transport quote; confirm what the offered method covers before paying.
- Item price and applicable Japan domestic delivery
- JPS purchasing fee, packing and any selected services
- International transport for the prepared parcel
- Applicable U.S. import charges and carrier handling fees
Compare consolidation with separate parcels
Once eligible orders reach the Japan warehouse, compare combining them with shipping separately. Consolidation costs ¥1,000, separate from packing. It can reduce repeated parcel charges, but a larger box can change the chargeable weight or available methods.
Trading cards, fragile figures and bulky clothing bundles have different protection and space requirements. Ask about the proposed packing before assuming consolidation is cheaper. Use the prepared weight and dimensions for the final comparison.
Confirm current U.S. shipping options and timing
Compare only the shipping options actually offered for your parcel. Consider chargeable weight, parcel dimensions, content restrictions, tracking, protection terms and any charges collected separately. A delivery estimate is not a guaranteed arrival date and does not remove customs processing time.
Japan Post published revised U.S. acceptance and advance-declaration requirements in October 2026. Check its current notice if a postal option is offered, and confirm the applicable process with JPS. Do not rely on an old shipping-method list or assume duty prepayment is supported by every JPS option.
Check U.S. import requirements separately
An item being sold or shipped from Japan does not establish its country of manufacture, tariff classification or U.S. admissibility. Keep accurate item descriptions, purchase values and supporting seller information for the declaration.
Check current U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance and the requirements of the selected carrier before dispatch. Do not assume a purchase is duty-free because it is inexpensive or label a commercial purchase as a gift. Rates, procedures and collection methods can change; this guide does not promise a fixed duty threshold or tax-inclusive delivery.
