Overview
Buying from Japan and shipping to the United States usually involves two separate stages:
Keeping those stages separate makes the total cost easier to understand.
- purchasing the item in Japan
- shipping the finished parcel from Japan to the U.S.

Step 1: Confirm the exact Japanese listing
Before authorizing a purchase, check:
For used marketplace items, save the listing photos and seller description before the item sells.
- seller or store
- exact product
- model or product number
- variation, size, or color
- quantity
- condition
- included accessories
- Japan domestic shipping
Step 2: Pay the Japan-side purchase cost
JPS uses a two-stage payment structure.
At the purchase stage, the customer pays:
Example:
International shipping is not finalized yet because the item has not been packed.
- item price
- Japan domestic shipping charged by the seller
- ¥300 JPS proxy fee per purchase request
- Item price: ¥7,000
- Japan domestic shipping: ¥0
- JPS proxy fee: ¥300
- Due now: ¥7,300
Step 3: The item arrives at the JPS warehouse
JPS provides:
Detailed inspection, professional authentication, or electronics testing is not included in the standard service.
- basic receiving check included
- 60 days free warehouse storage
- item photos for ¥500/item when requested
- free consolidation of eligible orders
Step 4: Prepare the international parcel
International parcel packing starts from:
¥500 per parcel
Eligible purchases can be consolidated without a separate consolidation fee.
That means:
- consolidation: free
- final parcel packing: from ¥500
Step 5: Choose international shipping
JPS charges:
Actual carrier rate — no JPS markup
The final shipping cost depends on:
Carrier shipping protection applies according to the selected carrier's terms, and JPS assists with eligible carrier claims.
- actual weight
- parcel dimensions
- destination
- contents
- selected carrier
U.S. import rules: do not rely on the old $800 assumption
As of 2026, JPS should not tell customers that packages under $800 automatically enter the United States duty-free.
Duty-free de minimis treatment under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) remains suspended for covered shipments.
U.S. import treatment depends on the merchandise, declared value, country of origin, entry method, and current customs rules.
For live shipments, customers should check current U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance.
Describe the merchandise accurately
Customs descriptions should identify the actual product.
Better:
Avoid vague declarations such as:
Buying an item in Japan does not automatically mean the item's country of origin is Japan.
- used cotton sweatshirt
- plastic anime figure
- used camera lens
- collectible trading cards
- gift
- goods
- merchandise
Regulated consumer products
Some products may be subject to U.S. product-safety certification requirements.
Beginning July 8, 2026, importers of many regulated consumer products subject to CPSC certification requirements must electronically file certificate data.
This does not mean every personal proxy-shopping item requires the same documentation.
It means regulated product categories should be checked before shipment rather than assuming all consumer goods follow one simple rule.
Batteries and restricted goods
Check before purchase if the item contains:
A product can be easy to ship inside Japan but restricted internationally.
- lithium batteries
- spare batteries
- perfume
- aerosols
- alcohol
- compressed gas
- flammable liquids
- certain chemicals
- strong magnets
Consolidation: useful, but not always cheaper
Combining several small purchases often reduces duplicated international shipping.
But large figure boxes, shoes, helmets, model kits, and other bulky goods can create high dimensional weight.
Before shipping, compare:
- actual weight
- packed dimensions
- one consolidated parcel
- split shipment
U.S. buyer checklist
Before purchase:
At the warehouse:
Before export:
- Exact listing confirmed?
- Condition checked?
- Japan domestic shipping known?
- Shipping restrictions checked?
- Total delivered budget set?
- Correct item received?
- Photos needed?
- Combine or ship separately?
- Retail packaging worth preserving?
- Accurate customs description?
- Carrier accepts the contents?
- Weight and dimensions confirmed?
- Current U.S. import rules checked?
